The term “hosting” does not describe a single service, but a variety of services that provide various functions to a domain name. Having a website and e-mails, for instance, are two individual services even though in the general case they come together, so many people consider them as one single service. The truth is, each domain name has a couple of DNS records called A and MX, which show the server that manages each particular service - the first one is a numeric IP address, which defines where the site for the domain address is loaded from, while the second one is an alphanumeric string, which shows the server that handles the emails for the domain name. As an example, an A record would be 123.123.123.123 and an MX record can be mx1.domain.com. Every time you open a site or send an email, the global DNS servers are contacted to check the name servers that a Internet domain has and the traffic/message is first forwarded to that company. If you have custom records on their end, the Internet browser request or the e-mail will then be directed to the correct server. The idea behind working with separate records is that the two services use different web protocols and you can have your website hosted by one provider and the e-mail messages by another.

Custom MX and A Records in Hosting

If you have a Linux hosting plan from us, you'll be able to view, create and modify any A or MX record for your Internet addresses. Assuming that a particular domain name has our Name Servers, you will be able to change certain records by using our Hepsia hosting CP and have your website or emails pointed to any other provider if you'd like to use only one of our services. Our advanced tool is going to allow you to have a domain name hosted here and a subdomain below it to be hosted elsewhere by modifying only its A record - this will not affect the main domain name at all. If you choose to use the e-mail services of a different provider and they want you to set up more than two MX records, you can easily do this with simply a few clicks within the DNS Records section of your Control Panel. You may also set different latency for every single MX record i.e. which one is going to have priority.

Custom MX and A Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

With the Linux semi-dedicated servers that we provide, you are going to have 100 % control over the records of all domain names and subdomains that you add in your hosting account. You can easily check what A and MX records each of them has through the DNS Records section of the Hepsia hosting Control Panel and editing any record takes simply a few clicks. If you choose to change your web or e-mail hosting provider, you can edit the required record and direct your domain to the other company for one of the services, as you still continue using the other one through us. You can also keep the main domain address here, while you edit the A record of only one of its subdomains. In case you are modifying the MX records and you need additional ones on top of the default 2 that we have, you can create them with ease and set a different priority for every one.
