Started in 2001, the .NAME generic Top-Level Domain is the sole TLD intended for personal websites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are popular by. At the beginning, only third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wanted to book john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already taken 3rd-level names remained functional.
